2BE BRIDAL

2be Bridal

Hi,

As many iof you know, the 2Be Bridal gowns have been featured on the TV show," Say Yes to the Dress."
So if you want that "say yes to the dress" experience, please stop in and visit us at Bridal Elegance, now at 2 convenient locations in Ottawa and Bloomington.

Well, I just got back from a buying trip of the 2Be Bridal line, and I have to say it is looking better than ever. I saw a design for almost anyone. Of course, the ever popular pick-up skirts are still with us, as well as an increase in halters, sleeves, and great necklines. I love this line because it has something for every bride, and don't forget if you are one of those girls who love silk as well as I do, then you need to know that you can get almost any 2Be Bridal gown in silk. I personally love the draping effect of silk, and also I love the luxurious feel of silk against my skin.

I also purchased some great new veil designs in all different lengths including some French net designs, short blushers to the longest cathedral lengths.

And now in our bag of tricks to make you your most gorgeous on your special day, we have a special undergarment like none I have ever seen before. This miracle worker can size down even the smallest waist by 1.5-2 inches, and also works on the hips. I don't quite know what construction feat this is, but it doesn't make you bulge out with back fat or muffin tops. I so totally love it!!!

The 2BE bridesmaid lines were completely fantastic. I particularly loved the short/tea length dresses. Very hip and trendy, yet chic!!

Well, enough for now, but if you need any info or have any ideas, please call either our Bloomington (309.662.8200) store or our Ottawa (815.433.3050) store. We are here for you!

CONTEMPORARY TABLESCAPING

Wedding
Notations

CONTEMPORARY TABLESCAPING
Tabletop patterns cover a wide range of color palettes and unique designs. Some patterns reflect how artisans delve into traditions to create current classics. Decorative motifs such as florals, lace and imagery continue to be seen century after century.
What distinguishes the work of the best designers working today is their inspired use of history updated for the present. These timeless designs reflect the way we live today and yet connect the bride with traditional looks.
There is a large and varied selection for your choice. Many designers prefer white linen as the background for their designs. But don't be afraid to surprise your guests with unexpected settings. Select colorful linens that reflect shades from your china to provide a more informal look. Select compatible casual napkins and placemats to provide even more variety. It's fun to use formal china for a picnic. It's colorful to mix patterns and provide an eclectic look to your dinner table. Personally, I find a mix/match table much more interesting and inviting to create and watch my guests' responses. I love to create a different placesetting for each guest, mixing colors and patterns between the dinner plate, salad plate, goblet, etc. Though I rarely go too wild, I try to find a common theme for the table and go from there. Another perk by using this method- I get to use many of my different china patterns for the same dinner. I don't tell my husband how many different sets of china we have. He's never asked, which probably helps us to still be married after all these years.
Another recommendation- Register for your good china now. You may not use it now, but you will in the future. Also your guests like to buy nice gifts for you, and after all, selecting your own china pattern is just more proof that you are truly ready to be married and set up your own home. Also, don't be afraid to register for beautiful crystal wine glasses. Nope, you can't put them in the dishwasher, but they certainly dress up a table, and as you get older and entertain more, you will definitely need them. Besides, I just enjoy looking at them!!
I alway recommend registering for a good, heavy flatware for every day use. You need to not skimp here. Make sure you get good flatware that will not easily bend when you scoop the ice cream, or try to cut the meat that you as a new bride might accidentally burn a little.
I also recommend choosing a pattern with a design on the handle. This will camoflage those tiny little scratches that inevitably come with washing, storing, and general use.
Please keep in mind a few basic rules when setting the table- the knife is on the right side of the dinner plate with the serated edge facing the side of the plate. This is done so no one accidentally gets cut or nicked. The teaspoon sits immediately right of the knife. If having soup, the soup spoon sits immediately to the right of the teaspoon. On the left side of the dinner plate, the dinner fork is placed immediately next to the edge of the plate. The salad fork is immediately left of the dinner fork.
I personally like to put the dessert spoon and fork on the table immediately above the dinner plate.
There even used to an old rule of no candle light until after six o'clock, which of course, has given way to use candles anytime, though I still recommend unscented candles for the dining area. We don't want the candle smells mingling with your great dinners.
I encourage you to know the rules, and to know when to break them.
Remember, it is your house and your tablescape.

Rehearsal Dinners

Wedding
Notations

REHEARSAL DINNERS
We know that the rehearsal dinner is a happy, relaxing time for family and friends. It is designed to get people together and set the tone for the ceremony and celebration to come. Traditionally, the groom's family hosts the party. Invited are immediate families, the officiating clergy and spouse, the complete wedding party and their spouses or dates. It is nice to include out-of-town guests as well. It is traditionally held immediately following the wedding rehearsal the night before the ceremony.
But local customs and travel arrangements may make that impossible. Plan to use place cards to help people break the ice and insure that they meet each other. The bridal couple and their immediate families usually sit at the head table, but more and more couples are choosing to mingle with their guests.
As the host, the groom's father makes the traditional toast to the couple, and he may take this time to introduce everyone if there is a chance that some guests are unfamiliar with all of those in attendance. This party is a perfect time to present gifts to the attendants, especially if the gift is to be worn at the wedding.
Whether it is served or buffet-style, elaborate or simple, the rehearsal dinner is a good time to visit with relatives and to make new friends as well.

Not the Traditional Wedding Venue???

Wedding
Notations

Not the Traditional Wedding Venue- How About Alternatives???
When a bride asks us about a non-traditional wedding site, we usually ask her "How brave are you?"
If you are planning an outdoor event, an alternative site is a necessity.
The weather has been known to ruin many original plans. But don't let that discourage you from picking the spot of your dreams-- just have a back up plan in place. An outdoor site can be a perfect spot for those of different religious faiths or other complications like a divorce or annulment delay. The intimate setting of a chapel, beach, park or backyard allows the freedom to add personal touches to the ceremony.
For a summer wedding, guests could be greeted with glasses of a cold beverage, umbrellas or fans. Canopies, tents and gazebos may be rented and needed! The location choice will set the theme for your wedding celebration, and once selected, make many subsequent choices much easier. Once you have covered weather, shelter and the number of guests you plan to invite, all other decisions seem to flow more easily.
Please stop in and discuss your plans with one of our trained consultants. It's good to have another viewpoint and advice on this unusual celebration you have planned. We hear so many fantastic ideas from our brides-- we love to share!

BLACK TIE WEDDINGS

Wedding
Notations

BLACK TIE WEDDINGS
We have brides who truly want to have a formal evening wedding. They know they can control the apparel of the wedding party, but aren't sure how to insure that their guests get the message.

Our advice is to put the phrase "black tie optional" or "place tie invited" on your invitation. This will help your guests be clear about the level of formality of your wedding. Some invited guests may be confused about this, so expect some questions. Whether they ask you or your mother or the groom's mother for clarification, women wear long gowns, cocktail dresses or dressy evening suits. Men should wear tuxedos or dark business suits. If you are getting married anytime between May and September, or in a hot weather state or resort, white dinner jackets with black trousers are also appropriate for men. A truly formal evening wedding can be a special and memorable evening for everyone-- the newlyweds and guests as well. We live in a very casual society, but once in a while, I still love getting all dressed up!!

WITH THIS RING

WEDDING
Notations

WITH THIS RING
According to most historians, the Egyptians were the first to use wedding rings in their marriage ceremonies. They believed that the circle represented eternity; so the ring was a perfect symbol for a lasting marriage. The same historians also credit the Egyptians with seeing the third finger of the left hand as the ring finger. They believed that a vein from this finger went directly to the heart and so if this finger were circled with a gold ring, the love was captured and would not escape. Whether they know the history behind it or not, this is the reason many women never remove their wedding rings.
Another part of this lovely ring tradition is thqt the third finger of the left hand is considered to be the "weakest" even though it is not the smallest. Because of its perceived weakness, it is the most dependent on the others for help in lifting and holding. For many couples over the years, this has become a symbol of their combined strength as a couple. Alone they can do many things, but together they can conquer many more.
Our ancestors believed that if the wedding ring didn't fit perfectly, it was sign that the couple was incompatible for married life. While rings have been important to many generations of brides, there has never been a law requiring their use. It is the strength of tradition that today's couples aren't likely to consider marrying without one. Stop in for more traditions and ideas on how to adapt them to make your wedding unique.

TIPS ON REGISTERING

Wedding
Notations

TIPS ON REGISTERING
We urge our brides to come in to register soon after they have become engaged. This allows time to make careful selections and gives guests the option of making purchases for pre-wedding events like bridal showers. The key decisions you make about china, silver and crystal pieces and designs will provide the focus for your registry.
As you begin to think about your registry choices, remember these pointers:
*Standard five-piece place settings of dinnerware include a dinner plate, a salad plate, bread and butter plate, and a cup and saucer. Other pieces are always available to be added. Soup/cereal bowls, mugs and serving pieces in your pattern choices are excellent additions.
*Five-piece place settings of flatware include a knife, fork, salad/dessert fork, teaspoon and a place spoon used for either soup/cereal or dessert. Many other additional and functional pieces are available. We suggest that you register for either eight or twelve place settings of dinnerware, flatware and stemware.
*Times have changed and it is no longer a problem to mix formal and casual settings. You can pair crystal with your stoneware or accent fine china with great pieces of pottery. Do let us help you explore the possibilities.
We invite you to visit us and look at the new as well as the classic patterns. Ask questions about our registry. Register for the patterns that appeal to your sense of style. We can show you how to pull it all together for a look that is uniquely yours. Mix and match patterns, stripes, colors- individualize your tablescape to make it say "YOU".

BRIDESMAIDS HAVE A LONG HISTORY

Wedding
Notations

Bridesmaids Have A Long History
We have lots of information and help for you concerning ways to incorporate centuries old traditions into your modern wedding. Please stop in and let us show you how to make the old seem new again for your wedding!
Do you know why you are searching for the perfect bridesmaid dress? Your bridesmaids are part of the history of weddings. They are an integral part of the day and you want them to look their best. Certainly a group of lovely young women in beautiful gowns is occassion enough for celebrating, but their roles do have a long tradition. In the old days of marriage by capture, a maiden was guarded by her family to prevent her seizure. In later centuries, this little "drama" was enacted as a "game" at country weddings. The bridegroom, gaily attired, coming for his bride, was met by a group of maidens all dressed alike. His part of the play was to detect his true love, "forsaking all others", and bear her away to the church.
As recently as Victorian times, brides' attendants ofter wore white dresses and even short bridal veils, looking like brides themselves. The best friend was designated first bridesmaid. The terms, Maid of Honor and Matron of Honor, are modern designations for that first bridesmaid. Our consultants can help you to ground even more of your wedding plans in tradition--- plus help you find ways to express that tradition in new and more contemporary ways.

GARTERS AND COINS AND PARTIES

Wedding
Notations
GARTERS & COINS & PARTIES
As you review the many wedding traditions you may wish to incorporate into your wedding ceremony, it can be fun to know their history.
The Lucky Sixpence-- Brides are urged to slip a sixpence (or dime) into the sole of their left shoe. Tradition has it that the gesture would appease Diana, the goddess of chastity and unmarried women, and the bride would lose her virginity and bear children. In other cultures, the coin has become a symbol of prosperity for the young couple.
The Bridal Garter-- The tradition of wearing a garter and then allowing it to be tossed to the single men at the reception dates back to the 14th century. It mimics the tradition of heraldic love in which ladies of the court gave a token of their support-- a scarf or ribbon-- to knights going into combat. The Order of the Garter was formed in England at that time and admission to the Order was an honor given to noblemen who then wore the garter to indicate their distinguished service to royals. Today, the garter is worn throughout the ceremony, and later is presented to the groom as a symbol of the bride's support. Today, this tradition of "tossing of the garter'" to the single men at the party is part of the Order of the Garter recognizing the service of the single men to the groom, and a sign that the guest who catches it ill be the next to marry.
The Bachelor Party-- Despite its occasional dip into excess today, the bachelor party does have its roots in history. In fact, it may date back to the grooms of Sparta. The groom would invite his close friends to supper on the eve of his wedding to celebrate and to reminisce about his past. It became an "event of mourning" for the passing of his bachelor status. Today's parties are usually just that-- an occasion for celebration, One hopes that they are done in good taste.

CEREMONY LOCATIONS- SO MANY POSSIBILITIES

CEREMONY LOCATIONS- SO MANY POSSIBILITIES
You are engaged!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! You've thought of a date. Now you begin coordinating that date with your search for the perfect venue to celebrate your wedding ceremony. Before you settle on a place, take time to insure that you have your priorities in line. While this is the occasion for the biggest party you may ever give, that should not be the prime target.
Your wedding ceremony is symbolic of a huge decision and commitment that you and your husband-to-be have made to each other. Where you will be married needs to be your first critical decision. If you are both of the same faith and attend a church or synagogue on a regular basis, your decision is easy. If you are living in a different area and away from your family's church, you will need to look for potential locations. Many churches and synagogues will only marry "parishioners'. So if a religious location is important to you both, make that site search a top priority. If you choose a non-religious loction for your wedding ceremony, there are several interesting options to consider. Most cities have wonderful old homes that have been turned into public ceremony sites. Public gathering spaces in historical buildings, museums and art galleries have all been used for memorable ceremonies. Whether you choose to be married at home, in your yard, at the beach or in the mountains, you can create a beautiful setting for this important day.

CEREMONY IDEAS FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY

WEDDING
Notations

CEREMONY IDEAS FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY

Once you have secured the site for your ceremony and have met with the officiant and/or his or her representative, you should have a good idea about the ceremony requirements and guidelines. Working within those guidelines, you should be able to add your own personal touches with the goal of creating a beautiful setting that helps to create the mood for your ceremony to come. As guests arrive, the setting- candles, lights, flowers and music can create an impressive atmosphere. Instruct ushers to make friendly small talk with guests as they arrive and as they are escorted to their seats. This will help to put guests at ease. If yours is a small wedding, ushers can present a single flower to female guests along with a note from you welcoming them to the wedding. This welcome flower can also be presented with the programs. Consider having ceremony hosts greet guests at the entrance doors. Choose one from each family who is likely to recognize many of the guests as they arrive. Choose host couples to welcome your guests. Your parents may be mingling with guests at this point or may be needed with the wedding party. Guest hosts can welcome people in their name. If you have music playing as guests arrive and are seated, change that music-- tempo or volume or both, so that special music plays as the parents of the bride and groom are seated.

More and more couples are choosing to have a card or note from them along with a single flower or small wrapped gift waiting in the pews for the parents as they are seated. Consider having a special song played as the groom and his best man take their places.

As the processional begins, the music should change again for bridesmaids and flower girls. Some weddings have bridesmaids scatter rose petals as they come down the aisle--instead of, or in addition to, those dropped by the flower girl.

Consider making an entrance-- cued by more dramatic "announcement" music.
If your Church or facility can manage it, dim the house lights and turn on pre-placed lighting aimed at the aisle just before the bride begins her walk to the altar-- either with her escorts or alone.

REMEMBER THE CEREMONY IS THE CORNERSTONE OF THE DAY.

What's New for Weddings?

Wedding
Notations

What’s New for Weddings?

While traditional wedding touches remain an important part of every bride’s planning, many choices are more contemporary and reflect a couple’s desire to make their ceremony and celebration as unique as they are. Here are some of the trends we are seeing for this year. Weddings today are both mixing and matching. An invitation may combine ribbons of paisley and stripes while bridesmaids can often be seen in similar colors but different styles. Reception seating may include round tables mixed with square or oblong ones. Centerpieces may be a combination of both tall and low arrangements. Unconventional colors are in. Brown is a big color now, paired with creamy shades of white or ivory or pastels in pink or blue. Imagine a cake iced in chocolate fondant with ivory and pink sugar blossoms. Fruit is frequently used when decorating for weddings. Pineapples, a symbol of hospitality, are being used in many destination weddings. Pears- the perfect “pair”- make an obvious choice for cake toppers. Bowls of cherries add color to table settings and marzipan fruits elegantly packaged in glassine bags make wonderful guest gifts. Stop in and talk with us about other new ideas to help make your wedding unique.

Celebrations!!

We believe that choosing your patterns of china, silver and crystal represents a celebration of life. The wedding day may bring a storybook ending to a romantic courtship, but all the days that follow it is more important as you share and enjoy life together. In addition to your regular place settings, we suggest that you add things to use for entertaining. Gold chargers and gold etched glasses, rich hues in linens and accessories with gold accents can add up to exotic entertaining. Using an eclectic mix of glasses, flatware and plates in different patterns, shapes, colors and styles can provide a jolt of the unusual to casual settings. You can pick up food from the deli if you have no time to cook, but remember that presentation is important. Let playful place setting help you. SPECIAL TOUCHES FOR YOUR WEDDING

We believe that special touches help to make a beautiful wedding. Here are a few examples:

o Address the wedding invitation envelopes in the color of ink used on the invitation.
o Place satin bows on every pew for a very festive touch. Flowers can be added to the

bows for reserved rows.
o Add a color, favor, reading or music, which reflects the ethnic cultures of those involved.
o Food should reflect the lifestyle preferences of the couple and be in keeping with the theme

and/or degree of formality of the wedding.
o Special monogrammed toasting goblets make a statement and can be used to recreate

memories in years to come.
o Honoring deceased parents can be tastefully done by dedicating a song to their memory in

the program, or by placing a flower where the person (s) would have been seated.

TO TOSS OR NOT

We know that it has long been a tradition for the bride to toss her bouquet and allow her garter to be removed by the groom and tossed to his bachelor friends- even auctioned off. These traditions came from our English cousins, where long ago spectators at the wedding would try to tear off the bride’s clothing believing it allowed them to share in the couple’s happiness. While the bride was fleeing her attackers, she would toss her flowers to the onlookers to placate them. Tradition now says that those catching the bouquet and garter will be the next to marry. But that tradition is changing. Today’s bride often opts to present her bouquet to her grandparents or to the couple in attendance that has been married the longest. She may also object to having her leg exposed, garter removed and tossed to a group. A newer version of the old tradition is to have a special smaller tossing bouquet prepared by the florist as well as having a less expensive garter ready to toss. A new tradition begun in some areas is to have attendants sign the bottom of the shoes of the bride and groom. The last names to be erased after a night of dancing will be the next to marry.

It’s fun to think of ideas of how to make traditions your own.

MORE TRADITIONS

It is fun to tell brides about some time-honored traditions, which bring a sense of history to wedding events. One tradition that most couples choose to follow is the exchange or rings. And it’s still customary for the groom to ask the bride’s family for their blessings before the engagement. While Queen Victoria of England is credited with being the first to wear a white wearing gown as a sign of affluence, American brides should feel free to choose any shade or white or ivory or subtle color. In fact, the latest trend is to wear ivory, diamond white or even gold wedding gowns.

A veil was once used to cover the bride’s head while she was being captured. In other cultures, one was also worn to protect the bride from evil spirits. For brides who seek a more contemporary feel, a headband, tiara or flowers might be the right accessory to complete the headpiece and/or veil. Receiving lines, once thought to be the way to share good fortune with everyone the bridal couple touched, are often replaced by couples making their way from table to table during dinner. The important thing to remember is to use the traditions that work for you and feel free to adapt them to your contemporary needs.

TELLING YOUR WORLD

We encourage our brides to talk about their wedding plans so that we can advise them about their invitations. If the bride is planning to invite many out of town guests or if the wedding is being celebrated on a holiday weekend, it is very wise to send save-the-date cards. They are usually sent out six months prior to the wedding date. Because invitations offer guests a preview of the formality and tone of the wedding, a great deal of thought should go into their selection. Formal wording should be sued for formal and church weddings. Individuality can be expressed by choosing unique sizes, textures, colors, overlays and ribbon trims. While announcements are nice to send to those friends who live far away, invitations are a bit more personal and do give the recipient an opportunity to attend or not. Unless the wedding is an extremely small and intimate affair, a reply card with a self-stamped, pre-addressed envelope should be enclosed with the invitation. Reply cards can also carry options such as dinner preferences and activity preferences if the wedding is a weekend affair. It is best to plan to mail invitations ten to twelve weeks prior to the event

NEW TRADITIONS ARISE FROM OLD TRADITIONS

We know that today’s brides want to follow tradition, but just so far!! Today’s bride wants to find ways to put her personal stamp on this important ceremony. She wants to personalize and customize a many parts of the wedding as she can.

Here are some traditional ideas with new looks. Of course, you want the first dance at the reception to feature your groom and you. But who says it has to be a slow dance?? Many couples are taking dance lessons together so the opening dance features them in a new way. Consider doing a tango, the dance of love. If that isn’t right for you, or you are as uncoordinated as I am, what about another dance with a Latin flavor? Salsa? Rumba?

During the reception you, as the new married couple, will be the focus of many toasts to your happiness. Why not toast your guests in return?? Thank them for attending your wedding and for their roles in your lives.

Do you need a cake? Many couples say yes, but… Then they proceed to have several smaller cakes instead of the large showpiece. Those smaller cakes often find themselves as centerpieces at each table. Or the couple may choose cupcakes, or cheesecakes or pies or ice cream sundaes. It is your call.

It used to be that couples left their reception early and guests stayed to party on. Today’ couple is likely to stay through the last dance and send guests home with their good wishes.

Instead of throwing their gorgeous wedding bouquet, more and more brides are choosing a smaller bouquet to toss or are omitting that part of the reception all together. Many are choosing to present the bouquet to their mothers or grandmothers with a big thank you.

Keep saying this over and over out loud if necessary- “THIS IS MY DAY”, and part of our job at BRIDAL ELEGANCE, is to help you create the day that says YOURS!!

Post-Reception Ideas and Plans

It used to be that the parents of the bride and groom stayed at the reception until the last guest left and thanked them all for coming. Now it is likely that the bride and groom themselves will stay until the last guest has left. The reception would have been a great party and no one- including the honored couple- wanted to leave.

The party mood is on and since they have the entire honeymoon to be alone, more and more couples are opting to spend time after the reception with close family and friends unwinding and replaying some of the more wonderful events of the day. A comfortable place, good food and drink and few hours to spend with friends and family thanking them for all they have done to support you both is a great start. Good conversation is the real attraction.

After the organized events of the reception, it would be good to get caught up on the things that happened or what was said about the wedding that the couple did not hear or see during the ceremony or reception. This would be a perfect time to review the candid photos that guests took on their digital cameras- scenes that the couple missed as they circulated with all their guests. The same is true of any video footage that was shot. It would be fun to get a peek at how you looked coming down the aisle and the look on the groom’s face as he first spots his bride walking toward him.

Memorable Photographs

When asked what is the one thing they would rush back into a burning house to save (after family, of course), most people say photographs and many specify their wedding pictures. For something that important, it just makes good sense to take the steps before your wedding to insure that your wedding photos and videos are special now and into the future. When selecting your photographer, make sure that you consider his or her style and whether or not it is compatible with yours. There are basically three approaches to wedding photography: there are traditional portraits, the “photojournalist” style, which captures events as they happen, and a mix of the two. You need to be sure of which you prefer and then look at the photographer’s work to see if the product matches the claims. Be sure to give your photographer a list of the people and events you specifically want captured. Try not to script every photograph so that the rigid list precludes his or her ability and time to shoot circumstances that may arise. If it is possible, consider a mix of the pictures you order. Get some in full color; consider having some shot in classic black and white (a classic, elegant and timeless look) and some in sepia (in which the photo looks old fashioned in tones of brown and white). You may also want one or two portraits done with some hand painting, which can add depth and hue to the images.

Be sure to talk to your photographer about any special or original shots you want taken. For ideas, I encourage you to look through bridal magazines and photographer sample books. You need to feel comfortable telling your photographer “NO” if they come up with an idea for a shot that is not you. Select a photographer who meets your needs and offers suggestions on how to capture all the details on your special day.

THE JOY OF COLOR

We know that one style and one color do not fit all people. The color palettes on today’s dinnerware reflect the diversity of people’s tastes. Colors do however make a statement. Shades of pinks, peach and banana are considered relaxing colors. Blues, greens and turquoise are refreshing shades. Nurturing colors are the subtle shades of cream, moss, rattan, tea and bamboo. Radiance in colors expresses joy, energy and good health. Bright yellow, purples, hot pink and electric blue and lime all radiate electricity. Red, black and white are considered sophisticated colors. Pick the color combinations that best reflect your taste as a couple and which mark your approach to life and the entertaining you will do. With careful planning, you can pull together dinnerware, glassware, linens and accessories that express your feelings and thoughts.

Destination Weddings

If you have decided on a destination wedding- especially out of the country- we have some advice for you. Because more couples are choosing this option, we have some sound and practical information and reminders for you. Decide on your guest list, which will likely be small. Research your chosen destination over and over. If it is a non-English speaking place, contact the Embassy and ask for information about the length of time you must reside there before you can marry there. This can vary from a few hours to several months depending on the country. If at all possible, visit the location before you make your final decision. Book your site early and have a local wedding planner do the legwork. Be mindful of the fact that other cultures are not always as prompt to reply as we expect. Nor do they always have written contracts. Once you have made your decision, resolve to be flexible and relaxed about the outcome. Everything will work out!!

RECEPTION IDEAS

The wedding reception is one of the biggest parties you’ll ever give. We have some ideas that will help make that party a huge success.

Setting ideas: For outdoor late afternoon or evening weddings, drape the trees and shrubbery in white lights. Indoors, replace white light bulbs with pink or amber bulbs. Either casts a softer, more flattering glow. Group candles of different heights in a combination of votives, pillars and tapers for a romantic look as a table centerpiece.

Food choices: Why not rent a popcorn and/or ice cream truck for an outdoor reception. Rather that a serious dessert table, create a sundae bar where guests can choose as many or as few topping as they like. Offer an espresso or flavored coffee bar for guests who may prefer non-alcoholic beverages. A new trend is to have individual cakes made for each table, instead of a centerpiece. That way the guests can help themselves and you don’t end up with 50 centerpieces that you don’t know what to do with.

Guest Activities: In addition to placing disposable cameras on each table for guest use, consider renting a photo booth. Guests will be beautifully dressed and may wish to have some fun photo reminders of their evening as your guests. Each guest may have 4 photos taken and when the film comes out of the mechanism, they have instant reminders of the evening. With a little thought and planning, you can create a reception that is both unusual and fun.

BRIDESMAID GIFTS

We know that your group of attendants represents your best friends and close family members, each of whom in some way symbolizes a part of your life. They are a reflection of you- where you have been and the choices you have made. It is this relationship, which drives the selection of a suitable gift- a wedding remembrance and a token of appreciation for what each of them means to you. While shopping for your attendant’s gifts does not have a time frame, you don’t want to be doing this the week before the wedding. Give it some thought so you can make an appropriate and personal selection. You attendants deserve a nice gift- something you would enjoy yourself. Don’t feel that you must give each person the same gift, but they should be in the same price range. One recent trend has been to pay toward their bridesmaid dress, as it helps to defray their cost to be part of your special day.

In summary, you have the choice of what you want to do for your bridal party. After all, it is YOUR day.

IT’S SHOW TIME!!!

Music is an integral part of your celebration. It sets the tone and tempo for your ceremony and will provide both background and fun for your reception. Most couples will want to have either a DJ or a live band playing at their reception and through the evening for the dance. You will of course, want to hear the band play and see how they interact with a crowd. As you interview bands for your party, do try to catch them at a live event. Check out the kind of music they play and ask about their repertoire. Don’t be afraid to ask how they will be dressed. If yours is a formal wedding, you really don’t want a band in jeans and torn tees. If your sis a wedding party with a strong cultural theme, consider hiring ethnic performers for the cocktail hour. To honor your Scottish heritage, consider a bag piper to pipe you into the reception. Some talented Irish dancers can be hired to entertain if that is your heritage. Dancers from a local ballet company could perform for your guests. To extend the music even further, match it to the activity. You’ll likely choose a DJ or a dance band for later. You may wish to consider quieter, more subdued and elegant music for guests as they dine. Pianists- solo or as a duo can entertain at cocktails and through the dinner. Some couples have hired artists to create caricatures of the guests as they sip cocktails and wait for the bridal party to arrive. Magicians can provide an interesting diversion as well. Ask us about other terrific ideas to make your reception truly memorable.

ATTENDANTS

In the old days of marriage by capture, a maiden was guarded by her family to prevent seizure. In later years, this drama was enacted as a sort of game at country weddings. The bridegroom, brightly attired, coming for his bride, was confronted by a bevy of maidens all dressed exactly alike. His part of the game was to detect his true love, “forsaking all others” and carry her away to the church. As recently as Victorian times, brides’ maidens ( hence the term bridesmaids) often wore white dresses and even short bridal veils to look like brides themselves. The best friend was designated first bridesmaid. Today we use the terms Maid and/or Matron of Honor.

Modern adaptations of bridesmaid dresses have emerged from this tradition. Today’s maids should wear gowns that complement the bride’s gown in style, formality and color.
We suggest that the bride do some preliminary shopping, choosing styles, fabrics and colors. Then ask the maid of honor to help make the final decision. Most bridal parties have many different body types and sizes, so please keep this in mind when selecting your styles. Some brides will select one style dress for the Maid of Honor, and the rest of bridesmaids will wear a dress of a different style. Sometimes, the Maid of Honor will wear a different color from the rest of the bridesmaids. This decision is up to the Bride.

One thing to remember is that you will all be in photos together and you will have these photos and videos the rest of your life, so choose your colors carefully, and I would recommend not too many colors as it detracts the focus of the picture away from the bride. And it truly is the BRIDE’s day! We recommend that you keep your attendants informed of your plans, but be careful not to demand too much. Please stop in and talk over your plans and ideas for attendants. Our consultants can give you lots of ideas!
